Abstract


A large industrial company routed to achieve theenvironmental management certification (ISO14001) got affected the process by the findinga Tree –about to collapse– in a communitypark adjacent to its facilities. The study ofthe situation determines the presence of twotransformers, stored in the firm maintenance area.An examination of its level of polychlorinatedbiphenyls (PCBs) shows that 13 gallons havebeen leaked, contaminating soil and likely tohave reached the sewer system of the city. Thecommunity is alarmed, the media involved and thecompany must make improvement plans imposedby the environmental authority. Due to the fact,changes occur within the company and the levelof development, new projects and expansionplans abroad are suspended.
